Dirty Boxing, Death Touch or Bruce Lee?
It seems there has been a move to re-brand an old set of fighting techniques/products (re-branding is what you do when you have a product you’ve been selling, but feel it hasn’t reached as many people as you desired–the whole New Coke vs Classic Coke is a case study in re-branding). And that certainly seems to be the case with the current group using the term “Dirty Boxing.” It has no bearing on using illegal techniques within the ring. Hell it has nothing to do with boxing–as boxing (it’s a sport, you know) is done with gloves. The people promoting “Dirty Boxing” are never seen with Boxing Gloves on–no, not ever.
So, if “Dirty Boxing” has no relationship to actual “boxing” what then is it? Well, it’s an attempt to re-brand a particular group’s idea about F.M.A. (Filipino Martial Arts). This group is centered around the Dan Inosanto group of practitioners. In and of itself it’s very interesting that Dan Inosanto never actually (in all of these years) trained in the Philippines. (There are many reasons for this–that is a different story for a different time.) One thing is very clear to those of us who have actually trained and got accredited in the Philippines and that is Silat and Kali (a highly charged term–and there is out right condemnation of it in Cebu) don’t mix. The reality is that Silat is Muslim. They are wearing Muslim attire (that isn’t some special Silat uniform that’s the Muslim uniform). Now some people, like the Kali/Silat groups in the USA think the two “arts” are part and parcel of each other. Nothing could be further from the truth. Quite simply, if you are not Muslim, Silat techniques will be withheld from you. The reality is that Kali fighters and Silat fighters are engaged in ongoing war (meaning killing each other) right now in Mindanao. And that’s something they aren’t telling the Kali/Silat groups in the USA (I doubt many are even aware of it). At any rate, we have the Kali/Silat USA guys leading the way to call what they do empty handed as “Dirty Boxing.” Now, I hardly feel like giving advertising space to any one of them, but one of their leading proponents of this has the same name as a famous race car driver. And he’s all the rage in those Inosanto attached groups. However, when I was (just last month) in the Philippines training the Recon Marines and doing training in Heyrosa Eskrima–I asked about this “Dirty Boxing” thing. And the response was that it’s some strange ‘commercialization’ of some techniques–but no one trains in “Dirty Boxing.”
Well, with it clear that the Kali/Silat USA guys had once again taken it upon themselves to tell the World what F.M.A. is and what it consists, I turned my attention to the actual techniques. The fact of the matter is some of these techniques are found all over the place. I’ll take a famous example of “Dirt Boxing:” One of the “Death Blow” secrets claimed by a San Soo practitioner is actually a technique that was considered a staple in Bruce Lee’s JKD (Dan lost a court case and NO ONE, read that again, NO ONE is to use the terms JKD or Jun Fan without Linda;s approval–yes that means you charlatan Wong, in Ypswich, UK.) The reality is that the eye jab was used long before Bruce (it was codified in a forgotten street fighting system I will be revealing in the near future). Furthermore, it has probably existed since modern humans first fought each other in primal battle.

It can work–it all depends on when it’s used and against whom. We in the business know that Vunak lives with this as a staple as much as he does with the battle punching (both are easily negated in Proelium Ars before you think you have discovered the panacea for street fighting). With that being said, I’m posting a supposed “Bloodsport” style fight. The reason it works is not because of it being the “eye jab.” No, it works because of a larger strategy component that works every single time (to know what that is, you’ll have to join the Inner Core). So, take a look at the fight below and call it Kali/Silat, Dirty Boxing, JKD, San Soo, etc. but do so because you realize someone else told you that’s what it is. Or is it?
