Strongest Man in Argentina killed are you next?
How was one of the World’s Strongest men killed?
Simply, Alan Garay (in the white shirt) met something he didn’t think would happen.
I’ll delineate how this tragedy replicates a common problem among those that have not been battlefield (and I mean specifically battlefield) trained.
The problem lies in not only the lack of physical training but in the lack of mental training. This is something that Martial Sport or being tough won’t teach you. What do I mean? Well, the tough guy considers himself ready, he considers himself imbued with mega self-confidence and has innate faith in his ability to handle novel situations. Unfortunately, the tough guy has probably only an experience inventory that revolves around the same sort of situation: e.g., sports teams in play where the fans become loud, aggressive and confrontational. The fights in the stands at hockey games or in a bar watching football(US version) are far too numerous to need further citation. There is a pattern to that event and there are predictable moves on the part of those that are going to fight. That experience prepares you (or the Tough Guy) for similar experiences it does NOT prepare you (or the Tough Guy) for experiences that are different.
Now, where do martial Sports (even the professional level ones) fail? Well, they also train the practitioner for a certain environment (which I have covered before–look at my past blog posts) and specific sorts of attacks. Let’s take MMA: the fighters will start with a movement towards each other, they know this, they both can see this, they both know what the other guy is carrying (the lack of clothes helps, as do the refs who check them before entering the cage), they will begin by throwing some punches: to see what the other guy wants to do–prior research will have been done to know if the guy is likely to attempt a takedown or answer with strikes. The clothing that the fighters wear does not get in the way of their movement nor does it hinder any sort of strike. These aspects cannot be thought to follow in other environments.
The battlefield is not like that and the Tough Guy persona won’t get you very far. The name of the game for the battlefield is to employ Isomorphic Training (this is the same training that NASA and Jet Fighter Pilots and Spec Op guys engage in). If your training is not doing that (and if you have to ask what it is–then you are not doing it) then you need to change and evolve. In Proelium Ars we have a saying ‘Evolve or Perish’ That says it all quite succinctly. If you are not ready for hostile environments via Isomorphic Training then you are sure to fail in one of them.
When I train military (or do Apex Training) I put specific technologies to use. For each environment I will have a set of technologies that work best. And within these technologies you will have to find which ones match your phenotype and disposition. Just like any integrated action–like running or climbing (you have to finally do it with your specific bio mechanics).

I must give a stark reminder that ANY situation can be lethal. Which returns me to the title of this post. The Strongest Man in Argentina (a professional Strong Man who was far from the normal guy) was easily killed. This wasn’t a drive by–there were no guns involved. Remember, this guy could acquit himself in most situations. He wasn’t one of the Strongest Men in the World for no reason, after all. So if it could happen to a man who could toss you like an empty beer can, then what are your chances?
Here is what happened (in the original Spanish):
‘Dos puñaladas a traición mataron ayer al mediodía en Las Heras, cuando intentaban robarle, a quien fuera el hombre más fuerte de la Argentina. Alan Omar Garay era strongman internacional, una especialidad deportiva en la que los competidores levantan gigantescos neumáticos de 400 kilos, tiran con una soga camiones de 15 toneladas y arrastran autos de hasta 1.000 kilos con sus propios brazos como si se tratara de un cochecito para bebés, todo en la misma prueba.’ Full story here: Strongest Man in Argentina Killed
Your take away–is to change your training.
And to remember this:
